You are here: Home Child Development
Recognising the fact that education is the prime factor for chlid development, every year SRF conducts a survey on children of school going age group, children never attended school, dropouts, and actual enrolment in the schools in its operational area. The motive behind this exercise is to exactly know the status of enrolment status in the schools and plan for interventions among non-school going children.
The organisation is carrying out the following interventions in education:
100 per cent Enrolment in Schools
All parents have been sensitised and motivated regarding enrolment of children and all children in 6-14 years age group have been enrolled in government primary schools. The process of retention is going on. Comprehensive database of the entire operational area about enrolment in government primary and middle schools has been generated.
Advocacy for New Schools and Better Infrastructure
Following pressure on the education department of the state government, a new primary school has been started at Arjunpur village in Sant Ravidas Nagar Bhadohi district.
Activation of School Management Committees (SMCs) and Village Education Committees (VECs)
Panchayat education committees have been sensitised and they are extending full support in the monitoring of government schools.
Integration of Physically Challenged Children in Mainstream
Physically challenged children have been identified in the area. Handicapped certificates for them have been arranged from the district health authorities.
Education for Children in Difficult Circumstances
For imparting education to children in special circumstances, the organisation is running three special schools for child labour in Varanasi district and one school for street and working children in slums of Varanasi city. Apart from regular education, children in special schools are imparted vocational training in trades like tailoring and different crafts based on local resources and keeping in mind the market demand and needs of local small scale industries. This strategy has been adopted to equip the children with necessary skills to take up income generation activities to support their families.
Generally, the children in special schools are in a poor health. In view of this, regular health check-up of all children in the special schools is carried out with support from the Health Department. Children are immunised and their parents made aware of the means of prevention from diarrhoea. Health camps are also organised for street children in the operational area. All the children are given nutritious food while they are in schools. Their parents are also made aware of the ways to counter malnutrition.
Campaign for Quality Education and Common School System
The Constitution of India has mandated the Government to provide free and compulsory education for all. But this mandate is more breached than observed for a large segment of population. In order to challenge this scenario, the organisation is campaigning and creating awareness among public members to demand implementation of this mandate, which has power to transform the fate of the people. SHAREFA does so with support from the organisations like National Alliance for Fundamental Rights of Education (NAFRE), Voice of Partners (VOP), Popular Education and Action Centre (PEAC) and South Asian Coalition of Child Servitude (SAACS).
Buddham Sharnam: Educational Sponsorship for Deprived Chidren
This is an educational sponsorship for deprived children living in and around Sarnath area of Varanasi. Twenty children have been covered under this programme.
