Project Summary:

Water is life because it is needed to ensure food security, feed livelistock, take up industrial production and to conserve the biodiversity and environment. Although, India is not a water poor country, due to growing human population, severe neglect and over-exploitation of this resource, water is becoming a scarce commodity. India is the most vulnerable because of the growing demand and undisciplined lifestyle. The major problem of our district related to WES is open Defecation. Rural people have also apprehensions having toilets built in their houses. Some families have a notion that it’s not auspicious to have a toilet within the house premises. Some orthodox families said that father in law and daughter in law can’t use the same toilet. Unawareness of the ASHA about their roles that she will get incentives of Rs/- 40 for per toilet construction. The situation is totally changed the ASHAs don’t have toilets in their home also too, so that she will put an example before the village. The requirement of ground water will be more than double the present level. Most of the schools in the project area have don’t toilets and if the toilet is present, it was not used due to dirty toilets.

The SRF project area is 48 km from the Varanasi. The project area is well known for its internationally popular carpet industry. The serious concerns of the area are problems related to laborers and their families. To reduce these problems, SRF is working in 34 communities of district to facilitate the availability of water and sanitation facilities in pre-school, primary and secondary school for all girls and boys, to promote open defecation village and to enable children and communities to access safe drinking water supply by govt. provisions.
